Natural Treatments for Gout

Gout is a form of arthritis that causes sudden, severe attacks of pain, swelling, redness and tenderness in the joints—most commonly, the big toe. Attacks of gout can occur without warning and are often triggered by certain foods, alcohol, or medications. Gout may also lead to complications such as kidney damage, ulcers, and lumps of uric acid crystals. 1. Drinking plenty of water

3. Reducing stress

Gout is often caused by high levels of stress, which can cause inflammation and damage to the kidneys, resulting in high levels of uric acid in the blood. Breathing exercises, yoga, and meditation are all techniques you can use to attempt to reduce stress levels and, hopefully, reduce gout symptoms as well.

4. Turmeric

Turmeric may also be beneficial in preventing gout flare-ups. Studies have shown that this spice can help to reduce the activity of enzymes that are responsible for the production of uric acid.

5. Increase healthy fats in diet

Consuming healthy fats, like omega-3 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid, can also help to reduce inflammation in the body and improve quality of life for patients with gout.

6. Drinking coffee

Coffee has also been shown to be effective in reducing gout flares. Studies have found that the more coffee men drink, the lower their risk of gout. It is also important to note that the same studies found that caffeinated tea does not lower gout risk, but decaffeinated coffee does; therefore, it appears that it is the coffee, not the caffeine, that has an effect on gout. Researchers speculate that phenol chlorogenic acid, an antioxidant found in coffee, could be responsible for reduced gout symptoms.

7. Eating cherries

Studies have shown that cherries can reduce levels of uric acid in the blood, preventing gout flare-ups. Cherries also contain anthocyanins, which have been shown to lower blood pressure and protect against kidney damage. Additionally, they are a good source of antioxidants and fiber, which can help to keep your gut healthy and may also contribute to preventing gout flare-ups.

Additionally, consuming foods that are low in purines, like beans, legumes, spinach, and avocados, can help reduce the risk of gout flares. Supplements like probiotics or vitamin D may also help to reduce the risk of gout flares.
